Documents and money

ID, birth certificates, flat or house ownership papers

Bottled water (the fire service suggests about 4 L), plus water filter or purification tablets
Ready-to-eat food: energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, tins

Health and hygiene

First-aid kit: bandages, plasters, painkillers, anti-diarrhoea, electrolytes
Your own regular medicines and glasses
Soap, hand gel, toothbrush and paste, toilet paper
Rubbish bags

Light, power and contact

Torch and spare batteries
Battery or wind-up radio
Charged phone, power bank, charger and cable
Another way to stay in touch, such as walkie-talkies

Tools

Multitool or pocket knife
Lighter or matches
Printed map of your area
Whistle to signal for help

Clothes and warmth

Clothes for the season and a rain jacket
Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, thermal foil blanket
Protective masks for the airways

Your household

Card with your name, address and a contact number, attached to the bag
One personal item, such as a photo
Children: their own small bag with a comfort toy, a snack, water, and contact and medical details
Someone who needs support: spare batteries for hearing aid or glucose sensor, and extra medicines
Pet: food, water, lead or carrier, vet papers

Check expiry dates of food, water and medicines regularly, and that the torch and radio work.

Never hand your documents to strangers offering help or a lift. Send a relative the car's plate number and your address.
